Supporting St James Parish

Supporting St James Parish

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our community at St James Parish has been very generous. Every time we have been challenged to respond to a new set of circumstances, we have responded without hesitation. We are an active parish and have a long history of hands-on compassion. It is a generosity of spirit that defines this community and we are all thankful for it.

Thanksgiving is the main source of income in our Parish. An average 65% of the Thanksgiving contributions usually covers the parish running costs, faith formation programmes and pastoral care activities. The remaining 35% is put aside in an emergency fund and assists in meeting our loan. Unfortunately, the impact of the COVID-19 situation has been substantial. Our thanksgiving contributions have declined by an average of 42%. The church extension loan amounts to $3.32M (estimated principal amount of $2.35M plus $975K interest) over 20 years. To be viable, as a parish, we need to become more disciplined with our budgets, expenditures, and future costs.

We use this indicator chart to show the target amount we aim to achieve and the progress of our payments. As shown in the chart, at present, church extension donations are the only source of funding. Hopefully, as things get back to some normality, we could start to include a portion of the thanksgiving contribution. Our short-term goal is to achieve $990K by 2025. By August 31st we have reached $151,583. We will be sharing the progress with you on a quarterly basis.

We encourage you to continue supporting our parish through online payment. Thanksgiving contributions or Church Extension donations can be made directly to the Parish Bank Account through an Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT).

Account Name: St James the Apostle Parish
BSB: 083-347       Account Number: 646 205 822

For Church Extension, please use as reference your surname and -ChExt. Eg: Smith-ChExt.

For Credit Card / Direct Debit contributions, please contact the Parish Office for more information.

Thank you for your continuous support and may you be blessed abundantly for your generosity.

Yours in mission,
Fr Jude Pirotta mssp

Dear Parishioners, people have been asking where we stand financially as a parish with the current drop in thanksgiving. The parish contributions over the last few months have dropped significantly. Although this has left the parish in a financially vulnerable position, it is encouraging to note that despite all the hardship, the parish income stands at roughly 60% as compared to last year’s. The graph below, prepared by Angel (our bookkeeper), gives a clear indication of this comparison between March-June of 2019 and 2020.

We thank those who continue to support the parish through the on-line direct debit and credit cards, or by any other means. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. We understand that not everyone is able to make a financial contribution at this time, but for those who can, we are reaching out to you. All support, moral and/or financial, is very much appreciated at this time, as the parish relies on your encouraging response for its continued functioning.

There is a growing misconception in the community that our Catholic Schools are Private Schools. This is not the case. We are a community committed to positive relationships and believe that optimal learning occurs when the school, home and church communities work together in partnership.

The School Fees cover most of the costs of your child’s education at our schools for a year.

The Family Fee is $1460 and is a family fee regardless of the number of children.

The Education Levy is $260 per child (covers stationery, day to day supplies, sporting events and excursions/incursions). (Note in Government Schools there is a compulsory Education Levy that must be paid on enrolment).

Enrolments for our three Primary Schools, St James, St Francis and St Clare’s, are always open.

Parish Life Re-Imagined

On Saturday 20th May, I had the opportunity to be a part of a panel which included Jan Keogh, Geralyn McCarthy and Fr Jude Pirotta where we ran a workshop on behalf of our parish on the ‘Reimagining Parish Life’. The program was put together by the Archbishop’s Office of Evangelisation and the keynote speaker was Fr. Timothy Radcliffe OP, a well renowned worldwide speaker. Fr Timothy spoke about how to touch the imagination and what it means to be a faith leader in our culture, we found his talks inspiring and reenergising.

In between Fr. Timothy’s talks we had the opportunity to host our workshop. We spoke to a group of about 40 people on our Parish story. Our topic was ‘Pouring New Wine Into Fresh Wineskins’ which is very relatable because we are a young and growing Parish with many ministries. We discussed what we do as a Parish and some of the strengths and challenges we face. I found the experience rewarding and humbling because we not only got to listen to some great speakers, but also had the chance to showcase what and how we do things in our Parish and our community.
