Prayers of the Faithful – 1st Sunday of Lent

Prayers of the Faithful – 1st Sunday of Lent

Introduction:

Lent – a new liturgical season, and an opportunity to start again. We can give thanks to God for giving us this season of grace. Lent is closely associated with God’s Covenant and with baptism, and the readings this Sunday strongly underline this.

Jesus’ time in the wilderness was Spirit-driven, not imposed by civic authority. His testing was not for a dangerous virus, but for faithfulness to his God-given mission.

Prayers of the Faithful:

Celebrant:   Dear friends, gathered in Jesus’ name for this season of Lent, let us take the good news to heart and pray for a new world.

Lector:   For Pope Francis, bishop of Rome and universal pastor, that he will stay strong in spirit and ever true to the Gospel of mercy.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Lector:   For church communities around the world; let us pray that this Lent will be a season of repentance, renewal and grace.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Lector:   For authorities determining the choice and distribution of coronavirus vaccines, that their decisions will be guided by a strong ethic of social justice.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Lector:   For those who work with young people in sporting, social and cultural clubs, that they will be wise and inspiring mentors for their members.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Lector:   For ourselves, that this season of Lent will lead us to rediscover the joy of the Gospel. (Pause) Let us pray to the Lord.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Celebrant:   We pray for the ancestors of the Wurundjeri people on whose land we stand, for all our loved ones who have died, as well as for the recently deceased; Gina Ceschin and Arn Raj and for those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time including all those in our Mass Intentions today, that they will be raised to life with Christ at God’s right hand.

                            (pause………………………we pray to the Lord)

Celebrant:    Good and faithful God, in Jesus you made an everlasting covenant of love with us. Forgive our failings and bring us to new life in your Spirit. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
